Harlow Orient, Debt Free Orient or No Ground Orient?

In an article by David Conn in today's (18/2) "Guardian" examing the proposed ground lease sale to Chairman Hearn's Matchroom organisation, Conn quotes Hearn as saying, "Hearn insists he has no immediate plans to move Orient, although he is investigating a site at Harlow."

Conn also quotes Hearn thus on the now almost certainly defunct Olympic Stadium move, "

"It was so exciting - imagine 'Olympic Stadium' as the postal address for Leyton Orient," Hearn said. "It would have solved our problems and we would have brought some money and given it some long-term viability. We could have lived with retractable seats over the track, but not with a permanent track and the way the seats are designed. The Olympics is a good thing but this centrepiece will be wasted - a white elephant requiring substantial ongoing cash from the taxpayer."

It is almost certain that Matchroom will acquire the lease of Brisbane Road (they own almost 80%of the shares), wipe out Orient's debts and leave the club with £2.6mn in the bank, a 20 year lease rent free for 5 years and £180k annual rent thereafter with a 50% profit share on any ground sale. Hearn thinks this is "over-fair" to the club, "It's a fabulous deal. I'm giving away 50% of the profit - that has never happened, not at Rotherham, York or Brighton."

Supporters groups such as Leyton Orient Fans Trust are wary of this "over fairness," stating, ""This seriously calls into question the future of our football club."

With no buyers in the wings it seems the club will be taken down the Matchroom route, a route many will regard as unsettling!
