Two goals from Neil Redfearn and one by experienced striker Graeme Jones saw Boston United earn an emphatic 3-0 win.

Opponents Leyton Orient finished a well-beaten outfit but contributed wholly to an entertaining encounter.

Both sides showed plenty of attacking intent with a teasing cross from Orient's Wayne Purser forcing Lee Beavers into a clearance and then Redfearn threatened for Boston with an off target long-range drive.

The visitors exerted further pressure and a header by Jabo Ibehre and shot by Matthew Lockwood both lacked the required direction.

Boston, though, broke the deadlock on 24 minutes when Jones rounded off good build up work by Stuart Balmer and Adam Boyd by firing home from 20 yards.

Moments later Paul Ellender found space on the edge of the Orient box and his drive was tipped over by Lee Harrison.

In the 33rd minute a good solo run by Boyd almost produced another Boston goal but his rising shot flew inches too high.

Boston survived a manic scramble in their own area on 39 minutes and then broke away only for Boyd to see a header from a Redfearn cross pushed away by Lee Harrison.

Back came Orient and headers from David McGhee and Wayne Purser came close to levelling matters.

Boston began the second period at a lightening tempo and a low drive by Redfearn skimmed wide before Jones blasted a shot against Orient's bar when being set up by Tom Bennett.

But the Londoners showed great resilience and continued to look dangerous on the break with Ibehre, Tom Newey and Gary Alexander providing plenty of pace, and the latter almost equalised on 58 minutes but sliced high and wide from a Justin Miller cross.

Boston countered with Redfearn twice shooting inches wide within a few seconds, first from a 20-yard free-kick and then with a fierce volley from distance.

But back came Orient and a rasping angled drive by Miller bounced away off the Boston bar on 71 minutes.

But Boston shook off that reprieve and 11 minutes later doubled their advantage when Boyd wriggled down the right and crossed low for Redfearn to fire in from close range.

Redfearn was on target again when blasting in a free kick in the 86th minute after Lee Thompson had been tripped by Ciaran Toner.

Boston boss Neil Thompson said: "I was delighted with the reaction that I got from the players, particularly after our poor FA Cup performance at Macclesfield last week.

"I thought we showed great character. Orient certainly had plenty of pace and aggression. But perhaps we wore them down in the end. And it was brilliant to see us score 3 good goals." Orient's caretaker-manager Martin Ling said: "It was extremely disappointing. We had a lot of possession but didn't create much in the way of clear-cut chances and didn't test their keeper enough.

"I think in my 10 games here this has to be one of two poor performances. Now it will be down to see how we react to this setback."
