An early goal from Lee Thorpe and a brilliant strike 11 minutes from the end by Matthew Brazier earned Leyton Orient their first win of the season whilst inflicting a first league defeat on Yeovil Town.

The result filled O's boss Paul Brush with satisfaction: "The early goal was a great confidence booster and we showed battling qualities throughout. When we play like that we are more than a match for anyone." Meanwhile Yeovil's Gary Johnson paid due credit to the victors stating: "We had a couple of good moments before they scored but I thought overall Orient deserved the result. They were better than us in all departments." In a high quality game full of entertaining football, the league newcomers might have taken the lead in the second minute but home goalkeeper Glen Morris parried the point-blank shot from Gavin Williams.

Two minutes later, Thorpe showed the way to goal when he collected a flick pass from Wayne Purser, took a further touch and then steered the ball home from inside the six-yard box.

Both defences enjoyed superiority for the remainder of the first half although the visitors almost levelled just before the interval when the hard working Kevin Gall sent a curling shot round Morris and narrowly past the far post.

Yeovil made the early running after the break and it was Adam Lockwood that offered the most severe test to Morris who did well to tip over a powerful 20-yard shot.

Orient too had their chances with strikers Gary Alexander and Thorpe a content threat but the outcome was settled with 11 minutes remaining when Brazier blasted a pass from Matt Lockwood to send an unstoppable and ferocious volley into the net.
