Wayne Purser fired a hat-trick on his debut to ease Leyton Orient's relegation worries, but leave Boston battling for Third Division survival.

Purser, signed from Conference club Barnet on deadline day in an £18,000 deal, twice put the O's ahead only for Boston to come battling back.

However, he made sure the points went the way of Orient when he headed home the winner 13 minutes from time.

Purser could not have dreamed of making a better start. The game was only 75 seconds old when Matthew Joseph's cross from the right was knocked down by Chris Tate. Gary Alexander fired in a volley, and from keeper Paul Bastock's parried save Purser headed the ball over the line.

Boston levelled out of the blue on 27 minutes when Richard Logan shrugged off the advancing Michael Turner and slotted the ball past Lee Harrison.

Leyton Orient restored their advantage five minutes later when Matthew Lockwood's shot from distance was blocked but fell kindly to Purser to lash home.

O's started the second half in style and Gary Alexander sent a header against a post before the Pilgrims levelled with Neil Redfearn's stunning free-kick from 25 yards that flew past Lee Harrison's left hand.

Howeve, Leyton Orient again re-established their lead as Purser's dynamic debut ended when he headed home Ciaran Tone's left wing corner.

The victory ended a run of four straight defeats as the O's recorded their second home win of 2003.

After the game Orient boss Paul Brush said: "I am delighted for Wayne- but it was not only his three goals- he crossed the ball well too.

"I like his attitude and I am sure he will create a lot of goals for us - but this is a great start." However Brush warned: "There are still six games to go and no one should get carried away by this victory." Disappointed Boston boss Neil Thompson said: "To concede two goals at set pieces was poor. We have three home games to come and they will be vital for us in the relegation battle ahead."
