High-flying Macclesfield Town maintained their promotion push with a gritty 3-1 home win that all but ended Leyton Orient's play-off hopes.

The Cheshire side dominated the opening stages and in the 10th minute Neil Mackenzie picked out Matthew Tipton who sent a powerful shot across the face of goal.

Four minutes later, at the other end, Daryl McMahon powered a volley inches over the bar.

Macc's best early chance came when Mackenzie hammered a 25-yard volley goal bound. The slight deflection made the save even more difficult but Lee Harrison finger-tipped it over the bar.

Harrison was then tested by Tipton who turned 22 yards out only to be denied by the keeper's diving full length save.

Macclesfield were not to be denied and in the 33rd min, Jonathan Parkin chested down a Matthew Carragher through ball before turning powerfully to slide the ball home in the narrowest of angles.

Macc keeper Alan Fettis kept his side in front with a stunning save moments before the break as a Matthew Lockwood free-kick fizzed over the wall.

Fettis could do nothing in the 49th minute when Lee Steele slipped the offside trap before driving a low shot to the far corner.

Only two minutes later Macclesfield were back in front when John Mackie bundled Parkin off the ball allowing Tipton to hammer home in his 14th goal of the season with a fierce high penalty in the roof of the net.

Macclesfield sealed the game in the 74th minute when Tipton broke down the right before picking out midfield playmaker Paul Hardsley who struck the ball home from eight yards.
