Leyton Orient caretaker boss Martin Ling feels he deserves the manager's job on a full time basis.

This comes after Orient defeated Southend 2-1 at Roots Hall despite having a man sent off in the first half.

Orient have won three of the five matches since Ling took over following Paul Brushes' sacking last month but won't name their next boss until the start of November.

Ling said: "I have spoken to the Chairman and a decision will be made after our games against Bristol Rovers and Northampton.

"We have had three League wins and I feel I could not do any more to impress. Today every player that put on the red shirt deserved praise as it was a real battle out there." Orient opened the scoring in the 27th minute when Gary Alexander grabbed his third goal of the season. Matthew Lockwood played a one-two with David Hunt from a short corner then played the ball back to Dean Hammond.

The central midfielder floated the ball to the back post and found Alexander unmarked who headed past Flahavan from six yards.

The O's nearly doubled their lead a minute later but Lee Thorpe shot at Flahavan when he should have scored.

Southend did not have a shot on target in the first half as lone striker Tes Bramble failed to get any service from United's packed midfield.

One minute before half-time Orient were reduced to ten men when Thorpe was stupidly send off. As Lockwood prepared to take a throw in Thorpe elbowed Duncan Jupp in the face and was ordered off the field by referee Paul Taylor.

Southend introduce Drew Broughton and David McSweeney at the start of the second half as they looked to make the numerical advantage count.

However Broughton, with only one goal in his previous 13 games failed to make any impact as Southend rarely tested Lee Harrison. United's day was summed up in the 87th minute when McSweeney headed into his own net to put Orient two up.

Mark Peters hit a hopeful free-kick and McSweeney, under no pressure, tried to head back to goal but his mis-placed header beat Flahavan.

Leon Constantine grabbed a last minute consolation for Southend when he finished from close range when he took the ball past Lee Harrison.

But Southend could not grab an equaliser as Orient hung on for the vital three points.
